Course Description

This course is a practical approach to learning how to create professional websites. We’ll be writing computer code, focusing on graphics design, and learning about social media and social networking.

Prerequisites

You should be comfortable with using a keyboard. If you need to constantly look at the keyboard and you type with two fingers, It’s going to make learning really hard. You should know how to use the Internet and be adept at learning new computer programs.

Organization

There are 12 classes in total. 3 classes a week, and each class is 3 hours in length. A class is either between 9am to 12pm or 1pm to 4pm.

Course Objectives

  1. To have fun learning
  2. To build at least one complete professional website that’s online
  3. An introduction to computer programming
  4. An introduction to preparing graphics for use in websites
  5. To teach students how to detect design patterns in web pages
  6. To improve students’ computer productivity by improving good keyboard habits
  7. To become aware and participate in "social media"
  8. To learn beyond the course material using the "social networks"

  2. Internet Celebrities you need to know if you're a Web Developer
  3. Web Semantics and W3C Validation
  4. HyperText Markup Language (xHTML 1.0 Strict)
  5. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS 2.0)
  6. Preparing Internet graphics in Adobe Photoshop
  7. Adding Javascript into a website
  8. Embedding Flash Objects into a website
  9. Using FTP Program to upload a website onto the Internet
  10. Basic Rundown of website hosting
  11. Common design patterns for use in websites
  12. Keyboard shortcuts that you probably didn’t know about
  13. How to use Social Media and Social Networks to leverage your online presence
  14. Tracking your Internet footprint and taking control of your online reputation
  15. Internet video games and funny videos (we all need to take a break sometime)
